Summary
The analysis of the epidemiological situation regarding cardiovascular diseases in the Lodz region arouses justified anxiety. The relevant data were obtained from the Regional Centre of Public Health in Lodz and from the Central Statistical Office. The cardiological prevention programme implemented in the Lodz Regional Sickness Fund has both intervention and education features. Its aim is to identify the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and to trigger activities related to health education. In 2001, the programme was carried out on three levels: in basic health-care units, in cardiological dispensaries, and in highly-specialised clinical establishments. 13 790 medical consultations were financed by the programme, which cost 369 751 zlotys.
