SELENIUM AND THE ACTIVITIES OF CYCLOOXYGENASE AND LIPOXYGENASE IN CELLS INVOLVED IN ATHEROGENESIS

Summary
Purpose: This paper presents the properties of selenium, its content in food, and health effects of Se deficiency.
Material and methods: The role of Se in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, is discussed.
Results: The authors review the literature on interactions of Se with key enzymes participating in the synthesis of eicosanoids and on its regulatory properties with regard to contractility of blood vessels and blood coagulation.
