Absolutorium – 27.06.2026 - Celebrating the Completion of Medical Studies

Every university has its own traditions. At Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, one of the most cherished is Absolutorium - a unique academic ceremony celebrating the successful completion of the medical curriculum.
Although it is often compared to a graduation ceremony, Absolutorium is a distinctive tradition in Polish higher education. It takes place after students have completed academic requirements of their medical programme, but before they officially receive their diplomas. It is a symbolic moment of transition—from student to graduate—and an opportunity to celebrate years of dedication, perseverance, and personal growth before the next chapter begins.
Medicine is far more than mastering anatomy, pharmacology, or clinical skills. It is a profession built on compassion, integrity, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to learning. Absolutorium offers a moment to pause, reflect on the journey so far, and look ahead with confidence and purpose.
As Nelson Mandela once said:
"It always seems impossible until it's done."
One of the most moving moments of the ceremony is the singing of Gaudeamus Igitur, the traditional academic anthem that has united university communities around the world for centuries. Its title, translated from Latin as "Therefore, let us rejoice," perfectly captures the spirit of the occasion. The song celebrates youth, friendship, the pursuit of knowledge, and the joy of academic life, while gently reminding us that every stage of life is precious and every achievement deserves to be celebrated.
By singing Gaudeamus Igitur, our graduates join a tradition shared by generations of scholars across Europe and beyond. It is a reminder that, while medicine continues to evolve, the values of studentship, curiosity and service remain timeless.
Another meaningful tradition of Absolutorium is the Turning of the Tassel, as one of the most anticipated and very private moments. At the beginning of the ceremony, the tassel is worn on the right side of the mortarboard, symbolising the graduates' status as students who have successfully completed their studies but have not yet been formally awarded their degrees. Graduates move the tassel to the left—a simple yet powerful gesture that symbolises their transition from Student to Graduate. It marks the end of one remarkable journey and the beginning of another. Although treated very differently between countries and universities, this tradition has become a widely recognised symbol of completing one's academic journey and embracing the responsibilities of a new professional chapter.
Absolutorium is also a time to express gratitude—to families, friends, mentors, clinicians, and academic staff whose guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support have made this achievement possible.
Gaudeamus igitur!
We celebrate not only the completion of your studies, but also the values you will carry into every patient encounter, every challenge, and every success throughout your medical career. The journey of learning may have reached an important milestone—but the journey of becoming an exceptional physician has only just begun.
This June our English Program figuratively turns thirty, and throughout the coming year we will celebrate this remarkable milestone.
Thirty years ago, the Program welcomed its first international students. Since then, thousands of young people have come to Szczecin carrying a passport from one country and leaving with something far more valuable: a profession and a white coat that speaks every language.
I truly believe that your greatest achievements are still ahead of you. Wherever your journey takes you, may you never lose your curiosity, your compassion, or the courage that brought you here. May your knowledge continue to grow, but may your humanity always remain at the heart of your profession.
Thirty years cannot be measured in calendars. They are measured in stories. Every graduate who has crossed this stage has become part of the English Program's history and legacy. Behind those thirty years are thousands of patients treated, families comforted, and lives changed. And every one of those stories began here in lecture halls, anatomy labs, and during sleepless nights before exams. From today onward, you also become part of the legacy of our English Program.
Congratulations, Class of 2026.
On behalf of the Dean’s Office
Olena Voznyak

How about a few changes?
Everything starts with small actions, everyday conversations, and the way we treat one another.
Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin is more than lectures, exams, and deadlines.
It is a place where people from different cultures, beliefs, backgrounds, and experiences meet.
This diversity is our strength — but only when we treat each other with respect and understanding.
- Tolerance means listening before judging.
- Respect means valuing other opinions, even when they differ from our own.
- Kindness creates a safer and more supportive academic community for everyone.
Every student deserves to feel welcome, heard, and respected.
Let’s build a campus where differences unite us instead of dividing us.
Be respectful. Be open-minded. Be supportive.
We are currently looking for students and staff members who would like to participate as actors in our new promotional film, which will be filmed in March.
If you would like to take part and represent the international PUM community, please contact us and join the project!
