Just BE… - Let's talk about dying

Death, Dying, and Grief are topics that are often difficult to talk about. But how can we speak about them with our loved ones? How can we support people who are grieving, and how can we cope with loss ourselves? Participants of the conference “Just BE… let’s talk about dying” will seek answers to these questions. The event will take place on November 15, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the M. Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin (Chamber Hall).

The conference will create a space for open discussion about life, death, and accompanying those at the end of life. It will combine medical knowledge, ethical and religious reflection, and the personal experiences of both speakers and participants.

The conference program includes three thematic sessions:

  • “Less ambition to control it all” – a discussion about futile therapy, pain management, and palliative care.

  • “The living will” – a conversation about the ethical, religious, and legal aspects of end-of-life decisions.

  • “The grief of others – let’s talk about death” – sharing personal stories and experiences related to loss and mourning.

Among the invited guests will be doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychotraumatologists, lawyers, and individuals who have experienced illness or the loss of loved ones.

Hosts: Dorota Wellman and Karolina Kalatzi

Changes in exam regulations at CET

Dear Students

please note the changes as they might easily go unnoticed.

With the reference to the Rules and Regulation of Studies of PUM adopted in April 2025 and coming into force form 01.10.2025, the most important information refers to §9 point 16 of the Study Regulations, which states that students must have access to the exam questions and correct answers after the completion of each exam session.

Access to the disclosed correct answers will be granted only after the official end time of the exam

Therefore, students who finish earlier will not be allowed to leave the examination room before that time.

The time allocated for reviewing the questions will be limited, depending on the number of questions:

  • up to 40 questions – 4 minutes

  • 41–100 questions – 9 minutes

  • more than 100 questions – 14 minutes

During the review period, the Didactic Responsible will remain in the room with the students.

Call for Participation – Survey on Academic Support for Students and Doctoral Candidates

By prof. Adam Kola

Vice Rector for Science in Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń

Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń recognises the vital role of students and doctoral candidates in shaping the future of Polish science. At the same time, we have observed that in recent years, the issue of developing a system of academic support for these groups within the academic community has not received sufficient attention. Therefore, we have decided to establish a team whose aim is to examine the current situation and the expectations of students and doctoral candidates, as well as to develop recommendations for actions that will contribute to the improvement of the existing system.

As part of these efforts, a series of initiatives have been planned, including both quantitative and qualitative research, as well as the organisation of a conference at which the results of these studies will be presented. It is particularly important for us to reach as many students and doctoral candidates as possible.

Attached, please find links to the survey questionnaires prepared in both Polish and English.

Sofia Corradi (1934–2025) – “Mamma Erasmus,” a Visionary of European Education

Sofia Corradi, an Italian educator, lawyer, and advocate of academic mobility, known worldwide as “Mamma Erasmus,” was the initiator of the concept that became the foundation of the Erasmus Programme — the European Student Exchange Programme, which since 1987 has enabled more than 15 million young people in Europe and beyond to study abroad.

A graduate in law from La Sapienza University of Rome and a Fulbright Scholar in the United States, Corradi taught pedagogy for many years at Roma Tre University and served as an advisor to the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI). Her international experience and profound belief in education beyond borders led to the creation of a project that revolutionised higher education in Europe.

What we now call academic mobility — the opportunity to study part of one’s degree abroad with full academic recognition at the home university — was born from Corradi’s personal experience. After studying in the United States (Fulbright Scholarship, academic year 1957–1958, Columbia University in New York, Master of Comparative Law), her home university in Rome refused to recognise several of her exams. Considering this an injustice, she decided to take action. In 1969, she formulated the idea of student exchange among European universities, which in 1987 led to the official launch of the Erasmus Programme, later expanded as Erasmus+.

Throughout her academic and professional career, Sofia Corradi authored numerous works devoted to adult education, academic cooperation, and intercultural learning, including:

  • Erasmus ed Erasmus Plus. La mobilità internazionale degli studenti universitari (2015),
  • Educazione degli adulti e comunità familiare,
  • Erasmus e Comett. Educazione degli adulti e formazione universitaria transculturale,
  • Le Conferenze dei Rettori delle Università… Storia e documenti.

For her remarkable achievements, she received numerous distinctions, including the Medal of the European Student Movement, the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and the European Award for Innovation in Education. In 2016, the European Commission awarded her the title of “Ambassador of the Erasmus+ Programme,” recognising her as a symbol of European academic solidarity.

Adult education and lifelong learning were not only her fields of research but also her personal mission. Human rights in education were a central focus of her scholarly work — she conducted research on the “right to education” as a human right and contributed to the work of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Sofia Corradi firmly believed that the experience of studying abroad helps students grow as European citizens — teaching understanding, empathy, and openness towards other cultures.

For several years, the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin has been hosting between 12 and 18 students annually in its medical programmes as part of academic exchange. Just a few weeks ago, we welcomed a group of students from four Italian universities, four Spanish institutions, and one Czech university — clear evidence that Sofia Corradi’s idea continues to live and flourish within our academic community.

Doctor of Law Sofia Corradi of La Sapienza University of Rome, widely known as “Mamma Erasmus,” passed away on 18 October 2025 in Rome at the age of 91. She left an indelible mark on the lives of millions and a lasting legacy in the world of international education.

Orientation Days for English Program Students Have Come to an End!

Can you believe it? September 19th, 2025 marks the final day of our Orientation Days! The week flew by faster than a morning coffee before class.

We've had a few intense days filled with meetings, new friendships, and walking tours around the city. We explored the hidden corners of Szczecin, discovered its landmarks, and tested the durability of our shoes along the way. By now, no one will get lost between Wały Chrobrego and Jasne Błonia!

Orientation Days are more than just organizational meetings and preparatory courses for first-year students. It’s about creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere from day one, developing academic and language skills, especially in the area of science-related subjects, helping students navigate the logistics of university life – from paperwork to schedules, and most importantly, providing an opportunity for everyone to start with similar preparation.

It’s also a great opportunity to become part of the PUM community, meet future classmates, and find the best shortcuts around campus.

Now, we’re looking forward to the official start of the 2025/2026 academic year!
