Services



Registration at the PMU Library is offered to:

  • the students and the employees of PMU
  • the students of the other Szczecin universities
  • the healtcare staff of the West Pomeranian region

Other visitors may use facilities and library materials on site use only.

Students of the first year do not need the library card. The student's ID issued by Pomeranian Medical University is at the same time a library card.

The users of the lending room are obliged to fill registration form containing personal details and activate student's ID.

Filling the registration form the user acknowledges that s/he will obey the library regulations.

The loss or damage of the student's ID must be reported to the lending room immediately.

The reading room provides access to the Polish and foreign paper journals. The reading room collections are available for on site use only, with open access to the bookshelves. The journals are presented by subject and then in an alphabetical order/by title. There are the current issues of all print journals from the library collection on the shelves. The earlier journal issues are kept in the library storeroom and can be delivered to the reading room within a couple of minutes. The orders for the journal issues kept in the storeroom are accepted till 7:00 pm every day and till 2:30 on Saturday.

The materials in use can be taken outside the reading room only by permission of the librarian on duty.

In the reading room are:

  • Polish and foreign journals in subscription for the current year
  • Polish and foreign current magazines and newspapers
  • the books presented by subject

The reading room is open for all visitors interested in medical literature, not only for the registered users.

All library collections are protected against theft.

Users entitled to borrow the books:

  • the PMU students
  • PhD students
  • the employees of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin
  • the staff of the clinical hospitals of the Pomerianian Medical University in Szczecin
  • the students of other Szczecin universities on the basis of the student interlibrary card issued by their own libraries

The healtcare staff of the West Pomeranian region may borrow the books  for a fee of an annual subscription specified in the price list

There is open access to the bookshelves in the lending room.

All items kept in the lending room are catalogued in the library catalogue Aleph.

There is no need to place a request via Aleph catalogue for the items kept in the lending room.

According to the regulations of the PMU Library it is not possible to borrow:

  • Ph.D. theses
  • the books published before 1945
  • the special collections
  • the journals
  • the publications kept in the reading room
  • valuable and rare items
  • the databases recorded on CDs

Above-mentioned library materials are intended for on site use only.

A student of the Pomeranian Medical University of Szczecin can borrow up to 7 items at the beginning of the academic year, later, starting from 1st November s/he can borrow 8 items more, the max number of items borrowed at any one time by:

  • the student is 15
  • the academic, researcher, staff is 20
  • other entitled users may borrow up to 5 books

In case the borrowed item is not returned by its due date, fines are applied by the system. (0.20 zł per volume per 1 day; items with status 1 week or shorter - 1.00 zł per volume per 1 day). If the fine grows to more than 20 zł, the user's library account is blocked.

Important!

The fines are applied by the system automatically. The system shows the balance of payments, including updated fines for the overdue books and total amount of fine.

Borrowed items may be returned directly to the lending room as well as to the reading room when lending room is closed (twice a week, see opening hours).

Other libraries of the public universities of Szczecin can be accessed:

  • on site - by owners of valid student's ID
  • for checking out - by owners of valid student's ID of the PMU, after obtaining interlibrary identity card issued by the lending room of the PMU Library (photo needed, free of charge)

The loans are registered by a the library computer system according to the barcode of an item and after showing student's ID or library card by the user.

The user is obliged to use reasonable care to prevent any damages of the borrowed items. As soon as the user receives the holdings, s/he should make certain these are complete and in good condition, and to make staff members aware of anything that might cause complaints. For damaging or destroying an item a fine will be applied according to the price list

In case of losing the borrowed items the user is obliged to:

  • buy back an item of the same or the newest edition
  • buy another item suggested by the manager of the library
  • pay amount of money suggested by the manager of the library for the valuable item impossible to buy in Poland
  • return a binded xerocopy of an item at user's expense

In order to acquire literature not available in the PMU Library collections and in the other Szczecin libraries the registered users may use the interlibrary loans.

The interlibrary loan means bringing in documents that are not available within the Main Library collections (as well as in local libraries) from other libraries and scientific institutions, using the electronic system of delivering copies of the medical documents.

Interlibrary loan is possible for:

  • the students
  • PhD students
  • the employees of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin
  • the staff of the clinical hospitals of the Pomerianian Medical University in Szczecin
  • the students of other Szczecin universities on the basis of the student interlibrary card issued by their own libraries

Making the requests, payments and receipt of the copies of the documents are provided in the reading room during opening hours.

The original library documents (e.g. the dissertations) brought by interlibrary loans are accessible in the reading room on site use only.

Services of the Scientific Infromation and Bibliographic Department:

  • providing library, catalogue, bibliographic information
  • providing electronic resources of information
  • assist in searching databases
  • bibliometric analysis of scientific publications of  the PMU researchers
  • printing
  • scanning of library materials
  • giving the tutorials on subjects: the library training, the scientific medical information

Access to all databases of PMU is available on internet network of the PMU. Authorized access outside the internet network of the PMU for the employees, the scientists, PhD students and the students of the Pomeranian Medical University can be realized after the registration in the Scientific Information and Bibliography Department.

The charges concerning the scientific information services are accepted at information desk.

Saving informations on one's own carriers or e-mailing them is for free.

In the PMU Library it is possible to copy or scan (format PDF) the library materials.

The orders for the copies are accepted in the reading room of the Main Library and in the Branch no 1.

The form of order includes information concerning:

  • name and family name of the user
  • in case of copying the journals - signature, title, year, volume, number, page(s)
  • in case of copying the books - signature, author's name, title, page(s)

and should be filled by the user.

The fees are provided according to the price list

There are two self-service copy machines in the Main Library of the PMU located in the reading room and in the hall next to the information desk. The machines accept only the coins and do not give change.
